
Pirates Fall Despite Dub-Dubs from Mason, Coffey

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) each had a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Butler, 3-1 (21-25, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25), on Friday.
Despite the loss, the Pirates can still qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, but they no longer control their own destiny. The Hall needs to defeat Xavier in tomorrow's regular season finale, and needs Providence to win at Villanova.
Mason finished with a team-high 12 kills to go with 16 digs, while Coffey had 16 assists and 11 digs.
SET 1:
The first set was the closest of the match, and featured six ties. Neither team grabbed a lead greater than three points until Butler took control late. With the score tied at 19, the Bulldogs finished the set with a 6-2 run to win, 25-21. Both teams had an attack percentage of under .190 in the opening frame.
SET 2:
Seton Hall never led in the second set, as Butler dominated from the start. The Bulldogs scored five of the first six points and never looked back in a 25-14 victory. Seton Hall had one of its weakest sets of the season, recording an attack percentage of -.100, while Butler connected at a .333 clip.
SET 3:
The Pirates rebounded nicely however, in set three. With the score tied at 10, the Pirates scored six of the next eight points, and a kill by Mason gave them a 16-12 lead. Although The Hall maintained the advantage, Butler cut the Pirate lead to just one, 23-22, which prompted a timeout. Out of the break, the Pirates bounced back, a kill by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) put them in set point, and the ensuing block by Barnes and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the set, 25-22. Seton Hall had an attack percentage of .333 in the third set as it cut Butler's match lead to 2-1.

A slow start in set four however, doomed the Pirates again. Butler jumped out to an 8-3 lead, which forced an early Seton Hall timeout. Leading 15-9, the Bulldogs scored six of the next eight points to put the set out of reach, 21-11. Butler went on to win set four, 25-14, and complete the four-set victory.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when it completes the 2017 regular season with a match against Xavier at Walsh Gym. It is Senior Night, and following the match Barnes, Kenneweg and Mason will be honored. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The match will be broadcasted live free of charge via the Pirate Sports Network.

- Junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had 11 kills.
- Sophomore Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) narrowly missed a double-double with a team-best 17 assists to go with nine digs.
- Senior Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) finished with 16 digs and six assists.
- Seton Hall recorded a .136 attack percentage for the match, which is its second-lowest of the season. Butler attacked at a .237 clip.
- The Hall had 45 team kills, while Butler had 55.
- The Pirates totaled 65 team digs, while Butler had 51.
- Seton Hall falls to 16-14 overall and 10-7 in the BIG EAST.
- Butler improves to 22-7 overall and 12-5 in the BIG EAST. The Bulldogs clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament with the victory.
- The Pirates fall to 7-4 at home this season.
- Mason's double-double is her ninth of the season and the 10th of her career.
- Coffey notched her 12th double-double of the season and the team-leading 30th of her career.
- Coffey played in her 91st consecutive match, which leads all active Pirates.
- The Pirates fall to 5-5 all-time against Butler
