NEW YORK - The Seton Hall men's basketball team continues its ascent in the national rankings, reaching No. 20 in this week's Associated Press top 25 and No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches top 25.
In addition, the BIG EAST recognized senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) on its weekly honor roll after he averaged 19.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in Seton Hall's two victories.Â
This is Seton Hall's 103rd all-time ranking in the Associated Press poll, and this is the fifth time that the Pirates have been placed at No. 20. The last No. 20 ranking came on March 14, 2016, two days after the Pirates won the BIG EAST Tournament championship. The Pirates moved up two spots from last week's poll after picking up an additional 10 voters, who previously did not vote for them.
The Pirates moved up one spot in the coaches poll; they were No. 23 in the preseason.
Rodriguez has led The Hall in scoring in three of its first four games this season. He dropped a game-high 23 points on Indiana last Wednesday in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, helping the Pirates secure an 84-68 victory. The 6-6 senior wing is averaging 17.0 points and shooting 53.3 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from three-point range and 85.7 percent from the free throw line.
No. 20 Seton Hall is headed to Brooklyn this weekend to take part in the NIT Season Tip-Off at Barclays Center. The Pirates will play Rhode Island Thursday at approximately 6 p.m., live on ESPNU, WatchESPN, AM970 and the Pirate Sports Network. The winner of that game will meet the winner of Vanderbilt-Virginia Friday in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. The two losing teams will meet in the consolation game Friday at 9:45 p.m.
