Piscataway, N.J. - Sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored a team-high 18 points, and senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) grabbed a Garden State Hardwood Classic record 21 rebounds, but the No. 15 Seton Hall men's basketball team did not connect on a field goal in the final 6:06 of the game as Rutgers aggressively came away with a 71-65 victory Saturday afternoon at Louis Brown Athletic Center.
The defeat snapped Seton Hall's five-game winning streak as the Pirates (9-2) continue to navigate through a very challenging non-conference schedule.
Joining Powell in double-figure scoring were senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), who had 15 points, senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.), who had 10 points, and senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who also contributed 10 points.
Turning Point
Seton Hall did a tremendous job setting the tone in the first half and came away with a 10-point lead, 42-32, on a SportsCenter #SCTop10Â worthy dunk from freshman Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.), who poked the ball away from Geo Baker, got a pass from sophomore Eron Gordon (Indianapolis, Ind.) and in open space delivered a reverse dunk.
The second half though as all Rutgers, who chipped away at the Pirates lead to tie the game at 52-52 with 10:17 left. The Pirates then rebounded for an 11-2 run as Sanogo and Powell tag-teamed to deliver. Powell connected on a three off a pass from Carrington while Sanogo cleaned up a missed field goal attempt and hit a baseline jumper on back-to-back possessions and then blocked a Deshawn Freeman shot that turned into a Powell jumper, giving The Hall a 63-54 advantage with 6:06 to play.
From that point on, the Rutgers defense got stingy, and the Pirates missed their final eight shots and turned the ball over four times. Corey Sanders tied the game at 2:36 with a paint jumper, hit two free throws at 2:22 to give Rutgers its first lead of the game and then hit a huge jumper with 1:35 to play to send the crowd into a frenzy and go up four, 67-63.
