Attendance Record Shattered in Setback to No. 2 Nova
2/18/2017 4:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Â
Newark, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) collected his 21st double-double and junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 22 points, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team ran into a hot shooting No. 2 Villanova team that was 67 percent from the field and fell, 92-70, in front of a Seton Hall Prudential Center record sellout crowd of 16,733 Saturday afternoon.
Â
Delgado finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his eighth consecutive double dip while shooting 8-of-14 from the floor. Carrington went 3-for-8 from long range and 5-for-6 from the free throw line in his 11th 20-point game for the Pirates (16-10, 6-8 BIG EAST) this season. Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) totaled 11 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
For the visiting Villanova (26-2, 13-2 BIG EAST), Kris Jenkins and Jalen Brunson scored 22 points each and shot a combined 15-of-17 from the field.
Â
Turning Point
Â
The Pirates took a 9-3 lead on a three-pointer from Jones at 17:20 in the opening period, but Villanova responded with a 14-2Â run over the next 5:11 to go up 17-11 with 12:09 to go. The Wildcats were up eight, 27-19, but six points from Carrington and a triple from junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) got The Hall to within one of the lead, 31-30, with 2:47 remaining before the break.
Â
The offense went cold though as the Pirates went 0-for-4 from the field to close the half, and Villanova hit its final four shots including three from beyond the arc to take its largest lead of the opening frame, 42-31, heading into the break.
Â
The Wildcats scored the first 11Â points of the second half and continued to build a lead over the first 10 minutes of the period. Villanova shot 75.0 percent (18-of-24) in the second half to seal the game.

Inside the Numbers
- The Pirates shot 46.4 percent from the field, but Villanova finished 33-of-49 (67.3 percent) from the floor and 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) from three-point land. SHU falls to 13-6 when shooting 40.0 percent or better.
 - The Hall continued its season-long trend of improved shooting in the second half, and finished 16-of-30 (53.3 percent) over the final 20 minutes. The Pirates are shooting 48.4 percent in the second half overall.
 - The Pirates were edged 26-23 on the glass and were out-rebounded for just the fifth time this season, the third time during conference play.
 - Although the Pirates were out-rebounded, they played well on the defensive glass and limited Villanova to just four offensive boards, tied for the fewest SHU has allowed all season.
 - Carrington scored 22 points to finish with his 17th career 20-point game and 11th of the season. He leads the Pirates with 16.6 points per game during conference play and 17.8 points per game overall.
 - Delgado, the nation's leading rebounder (13.2 per game), had 19 points and 12 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season, including eight in a row. He helped SHU take a 14-6 advantage in second chance points on the legs of seven offensive boards. He is second in the country with 4.7 offensive rebounds per game.
 - Jones continued to take care of the ball in home games and finished with four assists to one turnover. Entering the game he averaged 4.2 assists with a 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio at home.
