Strong Second Half Pushes The Hall Past Xavier
2/22/2017 11:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Newark, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) secured his ninth straight double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team continued to bolster its tournament resume with a 71-64 victory over Xavier at Prudential Center Wednesday night.
Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting and became the 43rd Pirate in school history to score 1,000 career points. Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored eight points and senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) filled the box score for the Pirates (17-10, 7-8 BIG EAST) with seven points, three assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals without a turnover.
Seton Hall earned its fourth NCAA RPI top-50 win of the season and now has two wins over top-20 RPI teams in the last seven days.
J.P. Macura led Xavier (18-10, 8-7 BIG EAST) with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting.
Turning Point
The Pirates trailed 31-30 at halftime and 38-32 with 18:03 remaining in the second half, but seven points from Delgado and a pair of triples from Powell fueled a 16-5 run to give The Hall a 48-43 lead with 13:11 to go.
Xavier cut the lead to two, 55-53, at the 7:26 mark, but a three-point play from Delgado sparked an 8-0 Seton Hall run that was punctuated by jumpers from Delgado and Rodriguez as the lead grew to 10 with 3:30 remaining.
The Pirates defense took care of the rest, limiting Xavier to 3-for-11 shooting from the field in the final eight minutes of the game. Rodriguez ended the game with a huge dunk after Jones came up with a big steal to end Xavier's comeback.
Inside the Numbers
- SHU limited Xavier to 3-of-11 shooting over the final eight minutes and shot 58.3 percent in the second half compared to just 42.3 percent for the Musketeers.
- The Pirates picked up their sixth win of the season when trailing at the half. They trailed by as many as seven in the opening 20 minutes, and 31-30 at the break.
- Delgado's 25 points and 13 rebounds netted him his ninth consecutive double-double and 22nd of the season. During his nine-game double-double stretch, he is averaging 18.3 points and 15.4 rebounds. He continues to lead the country in rebounding (13.2 per game) and offensive boards (4.8 per game).
- Rodriguez notched his seventh 20-point game of the season with his 22 points, including his 1,000th career point. He is averaging 16.7 points per game against Xavier during his career.
- Although he had an off shooting night, junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Pirates with five assists and turned the ball over just once. He has a 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio over the last 11 games.
- The Pirates finished with 13 assists on 24 field goals and turned the ball over just eight times. The last time SHU finished with fewer than 10 turnovers this season was in the first matchup with Xavier when The Hall recorded a season-low seven turnovers.
- SHU scored 14 points off 13 Xavier turnovers.
- Between Delgado's 25 points and Rodriguez's 22, it was the first time two Pirates scored 20 or more in the same game since Jan. 11 at Marquette when Rodriguez had 30 and Carrington scored 22.
News and Notes
- The Hall continues to pick up crucial victories in big games, and now has four wins over top-50 RPI opponents. Entering Wednesday's contest, Xavier was No. 17 in the NCAA RPI and No. 36 in the KenPom. As of Tuesday, Feb. 21, only 26 teams in the nation have at least four top-50 RPI victories on their resume this season.
- The win is the second victory for the Pirates over a top-20 RPI team in seven days.
- The Pirates improve to 10-6 in the all-time series with Xavier and 7-0 at home.
- SHU is now 11-2 at home this season, and 12-5 in its last 17 home BIG EAST games.
- The Hall continues to play well in "rematch" games, and is now 13-5 when facing an opponent for the second or third time in the same season since the start of the 2015-16 season.
- Rodriguez became the 43rd student-athlete in school history. Rodriguez, Delgado and Carrington are just the second trio of 1,000-point scorers to be active in the same season, joining John Morton, Daryll Walker and Ramon Ramos of the program's historical 1988-89 national runner-up team.
- Dating back to the beginning of last season, the Pirates are 40-1 in their last 41 games when holding at least a seven-point lead at any point in the contest.
