Pirates Win Overtime Thriller at Georgetown
2/4/2017 4:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON -Â Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) dominated by scoring a career-high 26 points and grabbing 17 rebounds and junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning basket with 1:06 remaining in overtime as the Seton Hall men's basketball team pulled out a 68-66 victory over Georgetown Saturday at Verizon Center.
Seton Hall (14-8, 4-6 BIG EAST) scored its first BIG EAST road victory of the season by taking down the Hoyas (13-11, 4-7 BIG EAST) at Verizon Center for a second straight season.
Delgado's double-double was his 17th of the season and 40th of his career. Junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 16 points as The Hall's only other double-digit scorer.
LJ Peak led the Hoyas with 17 points and seven assists.
Turning Point
In a game that featured nine ties and 14 lead changes, it came down to the final minute of regulation and again in overtime. The Pirates led 59-54 with 7:18 left in regulation, but points then became hard to come by. It was tied 59-59 for nearly three minutes until Peak made a pair of free throws at 1:25 to go up two.
The two teams traded baskets again as Georgetown led 63-61. Carrington then drove into the lane, stopped and then put up a leaner from inside the paint that went in to tie the game at 63-63. Georgetown's Rodney Pryor missed a jumper with 10 seconds left, and Carrington went for the win in transition, but he was called for a charge, fouling out of the game and sending it to overtime.
With the Pirates up 65-64 late in overtime, Pryor nailed a huge jumper with 1:27 to go to reclaim the lead. Then Rodriguez curled from under the basket to the free throw line, grabbed a pass from freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.), took a dribble in and hit a one-handed paint floater to put the Pirates back up, 67-66.
The teams traded missed baskets, and it was Delgado who then came up with a strip of Pryor with four seconds left underneath the basket that helped send senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) to the foul line, where he made one of two. The Georgetown desperation three from halfcourt was way off, sending The Hall to victory.
Inside the Numbers
