NEW YORK - Junior teammates Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) have earned 2017 All-BIG EAST distinction, the conference office announced Sunday the day after the regular season concluded. Delgado was a unanimous selection to the first team, and Carrington was named to the second team.
Delgado, the 2015 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and a 2016 All-BIG EAST honorable mention, is Seton Hall's 10th all-time first-team All-BIG EAST selection and the second under head coach Kevin Willard, joining Isaiah Whitehead, who was also a unanimous first-team pick last season. With Carrington's second-team nod, the Pirates have a pair of All-BIG EAST honorees for a second straight season, and it's the first time that The Hall has placed a first teamer and second teamer in the same season since 1993 when Terry Dehere was a first-team selection and Arturas Kanisovas was a second-team pick.
Delgado has posted historic numbers all season that has made him one of the best big men in the nation. He is the country's leading rebounder at 13.1 per game overall, and he finished the BIG EAST schedule as the conference's rebounding champion at 14.1 per game over the 18-game schedule that set a new conference single-season record. He also leads the nation in offensive rebounding (4.83 per game) and double-doubles (25). He is currently on a 12-game double-double streak and has recorded one in 23 of the last 24 games.Â
Incredibly, Delgado, a 10-time selection to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this season and the March 5 BIG EAST Player of the Week, grabbed 188 more rebounds than any other student-athlete in the BIG EAST. He also finished 12th in the conference in scoring overall (15.7 points per game) and sixth in conference games only (16.4 points per game). Both his 55.1 percent field goal shooting overall and 54.5 percent field goal shooting in conference games ranks fifth-best in the league.
Delgado's signature games have come in varying fashion. In a home win over St. John's on Jan. 22, he delivered 21 points and 20 rebounds, making him the first BIG EAST player to post a 20-20 game since 2010 and the first Pirate since Eddie Griffin in 2001 to do it. Three days later against Butler, he grabbed 22 rebounds to make him the first BIG EAST player ever to grab 20+ rebounds in back-to-back conference games. In an overtime win at Georgetown that jump-started Seton Hall's winning run, Delgado scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. He also has had clutch performances in wins over nationally ranked Creighton (17 points, 17 rebounds) and Butler (20 points, 16 rebounds).
Carrington, the Feb. 20 BIG EAST Player of the Week, earns his first All-BIG EAST selection, and it comes after leading the Pirates in scoring during the regular season at 17.0 points per game, that ranks him sixth in the conference. In addition, he ranked 12th in the league in assists (3.1 per game) and 13th in steals (1.2 per game). In BIG EAST games, he stepped up his game as a distributor, ranking fifth in assists (3.7 per game) and assist/turnover ratio (1.69).Â
Carrington has had multiple signature games this season; he opened the season with a 27-point performance against Fairleigh Dickinson; he scored six consecutive points in the final minute to beat Marquette at home and then forced overtime against the Golden Eagles on the road with a tying jumper; he scored 21 points and had the game-winning assist on a Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) shot to beat Providence in overtime and he had what proved to be the game-winning basket at No. 13 Butler to earn a huge road victory. His best performance of the season was an epic 41-point outburst against No. 20 Creighton that included a highlight steal and dunk in the final seconds to ice the victory. His 41 points are a high for any BIG EAST student-athlete this season and tied for the most by any Pirate in a BIG EAST game ever. It also ranks in the top 10 of most points by a Pirate ever.
Carrington, Delgado and the Pirates strung seven wins together over their last nine BIG EAST games to finish in third place in the BIG EAST for a second consecutive season. They are 20-10 overall and 10-8 in the conference, marking the program's first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 1991-94 teams posted three straight and the first back-to-back winning BIG EAST seasons since 2003-04. With Willard at the helm, Seton Hall will go for its second straight BIG EAST Tournament championship beginning Thursday against Marquette at Madison Square Garden at 2:30 p.m., live on FS1, FOX Sports GO, AM970 The Answer and the Pirate Sports Network.
