NEW YORK - After being the bridesmaid on the BIG EAST Honor Roll 10 times this season, junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic), finally upgraded to the bride on the last week of the regular season. After recording two more double-doubles, averaging 16.0 points and 14.5 rebounds and shooting 71 percent from the field, he was finally named BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced Sunday morning.
The nation's leader in rebounding and the BIG EAST rebounding champion becomes the third different Pirate to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, joining teammates Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.), the Jan. 9 honoree, and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the Feb. 20 winner.
Delgado was instrumental in leading The Hall to a 2-0 week that included a home win over Georgetown and a huge road win at No. 13 Butler. Against the Hoyas, he delivered what proved to be the game-winning layup with 1:12 remaining in the game as the Pirates came away with a 62-59 victory. He finished with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds. Then at Butler, he poured in 20 points and 16 rebounds, including 11 points and 11 boards in the second half alone as he helped The Hall overcome a 10-point deficit and score the upset victory. Of his 13 rebounds, seven were on the offensive glass, and he alone scored 13 second chance points off those rebounds. He also helped Seton Hall shut out the Bulldogs on the glass in the final 7:29 of the game.
Delgado is having an All-American calibur season, averaging 15.7 points and 13.1 rebounds in 30 games. He is leading the nation in rebounding, offensive rebounding (4.83) and double-doubles (25). He also finished the season as the BIG EAST rebounding champion, averaging 14.1 per game and grabbing 253 total, both of which are new all-time BIG EAST single-season records.
In the record books, Delgado is fifth all-time at Seton Hall in rebounds (1,016), 35th in scoring (1,097) and is only the fifth in school history to have 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. In BIG EAST play, he is fourth all-time in rebounds (614) and second in rebounding average (11.37).
Delgado and the Pirates have won seven of their last nine games to finish the regular season 20-10 overall and 10-8 in the BIG EAST, good for a tie for third place. They will begin the BIG EAST Tournament Thursday with a quarterfinal match against Marquette at Madison Square Garden at 2:30 p.m., live on FS1, FOX Sports GO, AM970 The Answer and the Pirate Sports Network.
