
Seton Hall Shuts Out Northwestern State, 3-0

NORMAN, OKLA. – Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) notched her second double-double of the season and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had nine kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team shut out Northwestern State, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-15), on Saturday.
Coffey finished with 16 assists and 11 digs in only three sets as the Pirates completed the Oklahoma Invitational with a 2-1 record. Thelen and Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
SET 1:
The first set was as close throughout as the final score indicated. The opening frame featured seven ties and five lead changes before the Pirates took control late. With their backs against the wall down 24-22, the Pirates charged back with three straight points to enter set point. NSU tied the set at 25, but a kill by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) put The Hall in front again, and blocks by Thelen and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sealed a 27-25 victory.
SET 2:
With the score tied at 17 in the second set, the Pirates scored three straight and never relinquished the lead again. A kill by Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) put The Hall in set point at 24-20, and a kill by freshman Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) won the set for the Pirates. Gasser had five kills in the second set alone as Seton Hall took a commanding 2-0 match advantage.
SET 3:
It took the Pirates a little time to get going in the third set, but when they did, they showed dominance. Trailing 12-11, Seton Hall finished the match on a 14-3 run, fueled by four kills from Thelen and three service aces by Kenneweg. The Pirates won set three, 25-15, to complete the three-set sweep.
Inside the Numbers:
The Pirates return to action next weekend when they host the 2017 Seton Hall Classic. The Hall will host Buffalo on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates will host Rutgers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Both contests will be shown via the Pirate Sports Network.
