
Pirates to Host Buffalo, Rutgers This Weekend

Seton Hall returns to action this weekend when it hosts the 2017 Seton Hall Classic at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates will face Buffalo on Friday in their season home-opener. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Buffalo and Rutgers will play at 11:00 a.m., before The Hall takes on Rutgers at 7:30 p.m. Both of Seton Hall's matches will be broadcast live on the Pirate Sports Network.

LAST WEEKEND
Seton Hall opened the 2017 season in successful fashion last weekend as part of the Oklahoma Nike Invitational in Norman, Okla. The Pirates opened their campaign against the host Sooners on Friday and won in five sets. Junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a match-high 18 kills to go with nine digs. Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had a double-double with team-highs of 22 assists and 13 digs. The Pirates won the first two sets against the sooners, but lost the next two, before winning the fifth set, 15-11.Â
On Saturday, The Hall split a pair of matches. In a morning matchup, the Pirates were swept by national-power Colorado. Thelen recorded her first career double-double with team-highs of 13 kills and 11 digs. Senior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) had 12 kills. Later in the day, Seton Hall bounced back with a sweep of Northwestern State to complete their first trip with a 2-1 record. Coffey notched her second double-double in three matches, while senior Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) recorded a team-high 14 digs.

For their efforts, Thelen and Mason were named to the All-Tournament Team.

AGAINST BUFFALO
Seton Hall and Buffalo will meet for only the fifth time in history on Friday. The Pirates have won three of the prior four matches, but was swept in the most recent meeting as part of the Colgate Classic on Aug. 26, 2011.

Buffalo is coming off a 4-25 season in 2016, but is expected to improve this year. They are picked to finish fourth in the East Division of the Mid-America Conference. Senior middle blocker Cassie Shado was named to the preseason All-MAC East Division Team.

AGAINST RUTGERS
Seton Hall and Rutgers will resume its close rivalry on Saturday. Both teams are 16-16 dating back to 1987. The Pirates however, have dominated the matchup recently having won the last four matches and nine of the last 11. Last season, the Pirates outlasted the Scarlet Knights in five sets in Piscataway.

Rutgers is coming off a 4-29 season. They are selected to finish 14th in the Big Ten Conference in 2017.
