
Pirates Fall in Mid-Week Contest to Hofstra

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Hofstra in three sets, 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 20-25), on Tuesday.
Coffey finished with team-highs of 18 assists and 11 digs. It's her sixth double-double of the season and the team-leading 23rd of her career.
SET 1:
The first set of the match was the closest with the teams tying nine times. A Hofstra service error gave The Hall a 16-14 lead, but the Pride responded by scoring four of the next five points and never trailed again in the set. With the score tied at 20, Hofstra scored three straight to jump ahead, 23-20. A kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) cut the Pride lead to 24-23, but Hofstra was able to score the next point to win, 25-23.
SET 2:
The Pirates again led early in set two, before Hofstra again took control. A kill by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) gave The Hall a 12-9 advantage, but the Pride went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 20-14 lead. Seton Hall hit a match-low .037 attack percentage in the second set in route to a 25-18 loss.
SET 3:
Seton Hall never led in the third set as Hofstra raced out to a 10-3 lead. The Pirates went on a small run, and a block by Barnes and Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) cut the Pride lead to 13-9, but they couldn't get closer. Despite five kills by both Barnes and Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.), the Pirates fell in set three, 25-20.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, September 15 when they play at the VCU Invitational against Northwestern. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Pirates will face host VCU at 1:00 p.m., followed by Bowling Green at 4:30 p.m.

- With 18 assists tonight, Coffey (2,160) passed Kadri Kruus (2,153) into sixth place on the Pirates' all-time assists list.
- Freshman Catherine Cruz (San Antonio, Texas) made her first career start and recorded eight digs and five assists.
- Seton Hall falls to 6-7 all-time against the Pride.
- Coffey played in her 72nd consecutive match, which leads all active Pirates.
