
Pirates Drop VCU Invitational Opener

RICHMOND, VA. – Junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a team-high 11 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost the opener of the VCU Invitational, to Northwestern, 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 14-25), on Friday.
SET 1:
Seton Hall got off to a strong start in set one, and a kill by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) gave it a 7-4 lead. Blocks by Thelen and Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) extended The Hall's advantage to 14-9. Northwestern however, responded with an 8-1 run to jump ahead, 17-15. The Pirates played from behind for the rest of the set, eventually falling, 25-21. The Hall fell despite having a .344 attack percentage, the highest of the match between both teams.
SET 2:
The second set was the closest of the match. The teams combined for five lead changes and 11 ties. In a back-and-forth set, a kill by Thelen gave the Pirates a 17-16 advantage. The Wildcats bounced back with five straight points to grab the lead, 21-17 and went on to win by the same score as the first set, 25-21.
SET 3:
Northwestern dominated the final set, and never trailed, scoring five of the first seven points. Leading 13-7, the Wildcats scored seven of the next nine points to take a commanding, 20-9 advantage. Northwestern went on to win the final set, 25-14, and complete the sweep.

The Pirates will return to action on tomorrow when they continue play at the VCU Invitational. The Pirates will face host VCU at 1:00 p.m., followed by Bowling Green at 4:30 p.m.
