
Comeback Falls Short as Pirates Fall at VCU

RICHMOND, VA. – The Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to tie the match at two apiece before dropping the fifth set to VCU, and the match, 3-2 (25-27, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 9-15), on Saturday.
The loss is the second straight for the Pirates at the ultra-competitive VCU Invitational and drops the Pirates record to an even 6-6 on the season.
SET 1:
VCU jumped out to a 9-6 lead in set one, but the Pirates rallied with seven straight points and an ace by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) gave The Hall a 13-9 advantage. From there, VCU rallied and the teams would tie nine more times before the Rams took control late. With the score tied at 25, VCU scored the final two points to win, 27-25. Seton Hall dropped the first set despite an impressive .333 attack percentage.
SET 2:
The second set was also close, but with the score tied at 16, VCU went on a 6-2 run and the Pirates couldn't draw closer than two points the rest of the way in a 25-20 loss. The Rams had a match-high .440 attack percentage in round two, compared to .280 for the Pirates.
SET 3:
The third set was largely dominated by Seton Hall, but VCU kept the score close throughout. With the score tied at 23, a kill by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) put the Pirates in set point, and a VCU attack error gave The Hall their first set victory, 25-23.
SET 4:
Riding the momentum from a set three victory, the Pirates dominated set four. The Hall scored eight of the first 10 points, and a kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) gave the Pirate an 8-2 lead. The Rams cut the Pirate lead to two on three separate occasions, but The Hall went on to win set four, 25-19, to tie the match at two sets apiece. The Pirates recorded a .400 attack percentage in set four.

Seton Hall opened the fifth set by scoring five of the first six points to take a commanding early 5-1 lead. The Rams however, rallied with a 12-3 run to take a 13-8 advantage. Another Koska kill cut the VCU lead to 13-9, but the Rams scored the final two points to win the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.

- Seton Hall recorded a .271 attack percentage for the match, while VCU attacked at .294.
- Seton Hall finished with 66 team kills, while VCU had 59.
- The Pirates totaled 51 team digs, while VCU had 42.
- Thelen has led the Pirates in kills in all 12 matches so far this season.
- Thelen reached the 15-kill mark for the seventh time this season and the 16th time in her career.
- Mason reached the 15-kill mark for the second time this season and the sixth time in her career.
