
Pirates Drop Five-Set Marathon to Bowling Green

RICHMOND, VA. – Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) and sophomore Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) each notched double-doubles, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Bowling Green, 3-2 (25-15, 26-24, 17-25, 25-27, 12-15), in the finale of the VCU Invitational on Saturday.
SET 1:
Bowling Green scored five of the first seven points, but the Pirates responded with an 11-2 run, and a kill by Madison Salkowski (Cold Springs, Ky.) gave The Hall a 13-7 lead. The Pirates went on to rout the Falcons, 25-15 for a set one victory.
SET 2:
Seton Hall never trailed the second set and jumped out to a 9-1 lead. The Falcons rallied late and tied the set at 22, but the Pirates were able to hold on and win a very close set two, 26-24, to take a commanding. 2-0 match lead.
SET 3:
The Pirates never led in set three as the Falcons scored nine of the first 13 points. Seton Hall rallied, and an Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) kill gave The Hall an 11-10 advantage. Bowling Green however, responded with an 11-2 run to take a commanding 21-13 lead in route to a 25-17 set three victory.
SET 4:
The script was the same for set four as the Falcons scored the first three points and the Pirates never led. The Hall trailed by a significant deficit for the majority of the set until the Pirates rallied late. Down 24-18, the Pirates scored six straight to tie the set at 24. Bowling Green however, scored three of the last four point so claim a set four victory and tie the match at two sets apiece.
SET 5:
With the score tied at nine, Bowling Green scored four of the next five points to take a 13-10 advantage. The Falcons went on to win the deciding set, 15-12, and the complete the comeback in the match, 3-2.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday. September 22 when they open the 2017 BIG EAST Conference schedule at Marquette. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET. The match will be carried live by the BIG EAST Digital Network.

- Sophomore Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) notched 11 kills and a team-best .478 attack percentage.
- Seton Hall recorded a .186 attack percentage for the match, while Bowling Green attacked at .187.
- Seton Hall finished with 69 team kills, while Bowling Green had 61.
- The Pirates totaled 115 team digs, while Bowling Green had 106.
- Thelen has led the Pirates in kills in all 13 matches so far this season.
- Thelen reached the 15-kill mark for the eighth time this season and the 17th time in her career.
- Mason reached the 15-kill mark for the third time this season and the seventh time in her career.
- Cvelbar's double-double is the third of her career.
- Thelen's double-double is the fifth of her career.
- Coffey notched her sixth double-double of the season and the team-leading 23rd of her career.
- Coffey played in her 74th consecutive match, which leads all active Pirates.
