CHICAGO, ILL. – Senior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a season-high 17 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team collected its first BIG EAST victory of the season, a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) win at DePaul on Saturday.
The victory snaps a six-match losing streak for the Pirates and improves them to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
SET 1:
Seton Hall never trailed in the first set, and a kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) gave it a commanding 12-4 lead, and prompted a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons stayed close however, and methodically chipped away at the Pirate lead. With The Hall in set point at 24-20, DePaul scored three straight points, but a Mason kill put an end to the Blue Demon comeback, and ended the set, 25-23, in the Pirates' favor.
SET 2:
The Pirates found themselves playing from behind for most of the first half of set two. Trailing 12-9 however, The Hall went on an 8-2 run, and another kill by Mason put it in front, 17-14. DePaul rallied to tie the set at 23 and prompt a Seton Hall timeout, but out of the break, a kill by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) put the Pirates in set point, and the following kill by Mason won the second set for The Hall, 25-23.
SET 3:
The Hall dominated the final set, again leading wire-to-wire. Back-to-back kills by Sharay Barnes (Swarthmore, Pa.) gave the Pirates a 16-11 advantage. A block by Mason and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gave The Hall its largest lead at 21-15, and the Pirates went on to complete the sweep with a 25-20 set three victory.
Inside the Numbers:
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, September 29 when they return to Walsh Gymnasium to take on defending BIG EAST champion Creighton. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
