ST. LOUIS -Â Seton Hall men's basketball senior center Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) has been named one of 14 student-athletes on the 2018 Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced Monday. Delgado is one of six seniors and one of four BIG EAST student-athletes named to the list, which was paired down from the preseason list of 32.
The award is to be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio. In mid-March, the USBWA will announce its 2017-18 All-America Team and, at that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Delgado, who is also on the Wooden Award Mid-season Top 25 list, is enjoying another banner season near the top of the nation in multiple categories. He is fourth in the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.7 per game, and sixth in offensive rebounding at 4.25 per game. He is third in the country in double-doubles with 14. He leads the BIG EAST Conference in all three categories and is also the only non-guard to rank in the conference's top-15 in assists at 3.1 per game (13th best).
Over the course of his four-year career, Delgado is the nation's active leader in rebounds (1,286) and double-doubles (64). At 699, he also is only two rebounds away from becoming the BIG EAST Conference's all-time leader in rebounds (conference games only). Last season, Delgado was an Associated Press All-America honorable mention, first-team All-BIG EAST, the 2017 Haggerty Award winner and a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award.
Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest player of the year award and the only one named after a former player.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With more than 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
