Pirates Rally Back, Fall In Overtime at Creighton
1/28/2018 4:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OMAHA, Neb. – Rallying from 20 down after a quarter and from six down with 1:30 to play, the Seton Hall women's basketball team (13-9, 5-6 BIG EAST) couldn't put a bow on the comeback and fell 81-64 to Creighton (13-8, 7-5 BIG EAST) in overtime on Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) led all players with 21 points for The Hall while Inja Butina (Zagreb, Croatia) posted 16 points and 10 assists.
The Bluejays came out of the gate hot, knocking down six 3-pointers in the first quarter and holding The Hall to 18.2 percent shooting to storm out to a 24-4 lead after a quarter. The Pirates answered with a monster frame of their own, out-scoring CU 30-11 in the second quarter and briefly taking the lead before going to the half down 35-34.
Turning Point
After two lopsided quarters in the first half, the final two frames were evenly matched until the end. Creighton took a 64-58 lead with under two minutes to go, before a Butina jumper got it within four with 90 ticks left. After a Pirate stop and a pair of Jackson free throws, The Hall forced a CU turnover to get the ball back down two. With 19 seconds to play, Butina found Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) inside for a game-tying lay-in. Creighton had a chance at the tail end of regulation, but Jackson broke up a 2-on-1 transitional opportunity with a clutch steal to send the contest to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Pirates went cold and saw Creighton score the final 17 points of the contest to push the score to a mark not indicative of the Seton Hall effort.
Inside The Numbers
The Pirates are back in action at home for a pair of contests next weekend. First up is Xavier on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
