NEWARK, N.J. – Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) erupted for 23 points and seven assists, and the Seton Hall men's basketball team used a first-half 19-0 run to pull away as the Pirates recorded a 73-57 victory over Providence at the Prudential Center on Wednesday to improve to 6-3 in the BIG EAST.
Carrington scored his 23 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor, including a trio of three-pointers. His seven assists match a season-high, and it was his seventh straight game with at least five assists. He committed only one turnover in 36 minutes.
In all, four Pirates scored in double-figures. Senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 16 points, and Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) notched a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) chipped in 11 points.
The Pirates' stout perimeter defense held Providence to just 2-for-17 (11.8%) shooting from three-point range.
Seton Hall (16-5) is 6-3 or better in the BIG EAST after nine games for only the sixth time in program history and first since 2006. All previous five times resulted in NCAA Tournament bids.
Turning Point:
Trailing 19-17, Seton Hall connected for three-pointers on four straight possessions, two of which came from Carrington. After two buckets in the paint by Delgado, a three-point play by Rodriguez extended the Pirates run to 19-0 and gave them a 36-19 lead with 4:09 left before halftime. The Hall held Providence scoreless for 5:47 during its spree.
Thanks in large part to a 14-point, 5-assist first half for Carrington, the Pirates took a 41-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
After the break, the Seton Hall offense continued its efficient onslaught. Delgado made his way around a defender on the baseline for a layup to extend the Pirates' lead to 20 points, their largest of the game, 49-29 with 16:21 remaining in the game.
