NEW YORK - Off to its best start to BIG EAST play since 1998-99, the Seton Hall men's basketball team's 14-2 overall and 3-0 conference records has helped place the Pirates in the top 15 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Top 25 polls. The Hall checks in at No. 13 in the AP, the program's highest ranking since Jan. 2, 2001, and No. 15 in the Coaches polls.
In addition, coming off his powerful performance in Seton Hall's 90-87 win at Butler last Saturday, senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) was named the NCAA.com National Player of the Week, the Met Writers Player of the Week and a member of the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The 6-10 National Player of the Year candidate poured in 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in the victory.
After ranking No. 21 in the AP poll last week, the Pirates vaulted eight spots to No. 13, which matches the largest in-season jump the program has had from one week to the next. The 1990-91 team also jumped from No. 21 to No. 13 in March 1991 after winning the BIG EAST Tournament championship. This is the fifth No. 13 ranking all-time for the Pirates: Jan. 22, 1952; Dec. 27, 1988; Jan. 10, 1989; and March 12, 1991. The Hall is 9-1 all-time when ranked No. 13.
The national poll rankings join two other high ratings for the Pirates, who are No. 4 in the NCAA RPI and No. 18 in the KenPom.
Delgado continues to show that he is the best big man in the nation after his dominant performance at Butler. He was 9-for-15 from the field and 10-for-12 from the free throw line, and his six assists generated 16 Seton Hall points, including four three-pointers. He now has an NCAA-leading 62 career double-doubles, including 12 this season. In BIG EAST play, he has 15 consecutive double-doubles that date back to last season. At 11.8 rebounds per game, he is currently the BIG EAST's leader in rebounding and third in the nation. His 4.69 offensive rebounds per game also rank second in the country.
The No. 13 Pirates are on the road Tuesday night in another tough BIG EAST battle, facing Marquette in Milwaukee at 9 p.m., Eastern. They will return home to play Georgetown Saturday at Prudential Center at noon in a sold-out game featuring the 1992-93 BIG EAST Championship winning team reunion and the P.J.
