
Pirates Fall to No. 19 Marquette on Saturday

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a team-high 10 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 19 Marquette, 3-0 (19-25, 25-19, 22-25), in Walsh Gym on Saturday.
Thelen had 10 kills, only three attack errors, and four digs. Senior Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) nearly had a double-double, finishing with seven kills and nine digs.
SET 1:
Trailing 4-3 early in the first set, Seton Hall went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-6 advantage and prompt an early Marquette timeout. The Golden Eagles however, bounced back with a run of their own. They engaged an 8-2 spurt, which put them back in front for good, 14-12. A service error cut Marquette's lead to 21-18, but the Golden Eagles scored four of the final five points to win set one, 25-19. Junior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a strong opening frame for the Pirates, notching a team-best four kills and no attack errors.
SET 2:
Seton Hall fell behind early again in set two, but again rallied to make the set close. Trailing 9-5, The Hall went on a 6-1 run, and a Marquette attack error put the Pirates in front, 11-10. The Golden Eagles responded with an 8-2 run to take an 18-13 advantage, and never trailed again. Seton Hall again cut the deficit to only three points, 21-18, but Marquette again scored four of the final five points to win, 25-19, for the second straight set.
SET 3:
The third set was the closest of the match, as the Pirates refused to fold despite the two-set deficit. Trailing 12-7, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points to cut the Marquette lead to two, 13-11. But Marquette was able to hold off the pesky Pirates, building the lead to as many as six points, 21-15. A 6-2 Seton Hall run again cut the Golden Eagle lead to two, 23-21, but Marquette went on to win the final set, 25-22.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Oct. 19 when it hosts BIG EAST rival Georgetown at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

- Seton Hall falls to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the BIG EAST, while Marquette improves to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
- The Pirates are now 5-16 all-time against Marquette.
- The Pirates fall to 4-9 in three-set matches.
