SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a team-high 10 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team completed a three-set sweep of Georgetown, 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-23), on Friday.
Gasser had 10 kills, only one attack error, a team-best .500 attack percentage and four blocks in a strong all-around match for the Pirates. Senior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) finished two digs shy of a double-double, registering a team-high 29 assists and eight digs.
The victory gives Seton Hall its third win in its last four matches.
SET 1:
The first set was one of the closer, more dramatic sets of the season for the Pirates, featuring five lead changes and 16 ties. A Georgetown ace gave the Hoyas their largest lead of the set, four points at 12-8, but Seton Hall responded with five of the next six points to tie the set at 13. With the score knotted at 21, Georgetown scored three straight points to enter set point. However, a Hoyas attack error, followed by a block by Gasser and Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.), and then a kill by Koska enabled the resilient Pirates to tie the score at 24. After staving off yet another set point, an ace by Koska put The Hall in set point, 26-25, and a kill by Coffey completed the dramatic comeback for the Pirates, 27-25.
SET 2:
Seton Hall led the second set, wire-to-wire, sprinting out to an 11-2 lead. Georgetown had to play catch-up for the remainder of the set, and cut the Pirate lead to as few as four points on three occasions, but couldn't draw closer. Senior Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) scored the final two points for Seton Hall with kills to complete a 25-19 second set victory.
SET 3:
Trailing 11-10 in the third set, Seton Hall went on a 6-1 run, and a kill by Amanda Rachwal (Bethlehem, Pa.) put it in front, 16-12. The Pirates maintained a comfortable lead until late when the Hoyas cut the lead to two, 23-21. A kill by Gasser put The Hall in match point, 24-21, but Georgetown responded with back-to-back points to pull to within one, 24-23. A Georgetown service error however, gave the Pirates their clinching point, 25-23, and complete the three-set sweep.
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when it hosts BIG EAST rival Villanova at Walsh Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
