
Thelen, Hennigan, Pirates Outlast PC in Five Sets

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded a career-high 25 kills, and Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) added 17 more as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team edged Providence in five sets, 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10), on Sunday.
Thelen tallied a career-high 25 kills, with nine attack errors, and a .291 attack percentage. She also had three blocks. Hennigan had a season-high 17 kills, while Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) notched a double-double with season-highs of 52 assists and 15 digs.
The victory snaps a seven-match losing streak for The Hall. It's also only the second time this season that the Pirates have won after dropping the first set.
SET 1:
Seton Hall led for much of the first set, but the Friars rallied late. With the score tied at 13, The Hall scored three straight, and a kill by Thelen put them in front, 16-13. The set remained close, and a kill by Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) put the Pirates back on top, 18-17. However, Providence responded with three of the next four points to claim their first lead of the set since, 1-0. Seton Hall couldn't draw even as the Friars went on for a 25-22.
SET 2:
In the second set, the Friars led for most of the early goings, and jumped out to a commanding 18-12 lead. The Hall rallied however, going on an 11-4 run, and another kill by Thelen gave the Pirates a 23-22 advantage, their first lead of the set. After the Friars tied the set at 23, a Providence attack error put Seton Hall in set point, and a kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) ended it in winning fashion. The Pirates had a .310 attack percentage in the second frame.
SET 3:
Seton Hall started off hot in set three, scoring four of the first five points. Providence however, responded with a 10-2 run to take an 11-6 lead. Trailing 16-11, the Pirates went on an 8-2 run, and a Friars' attack error put The Hall in front, 19-18. After Providence tied the score at 19, Seton Hall scored four straight to take a late 23-19 advantage. A kill by Hennigan put the Pirates in set point, 24-21, and a kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) ended the set in The Hall's favor, 25-22.
SET 4:
Seton Hall never led, but the Friars didn't open a lead of greater than three points until late. With the score tied at 14, Providence went on a 6-2 run to take a 20-16 advantage. A service ace by Coffey capped four straight points for The Hall to tie the set at 20, but the Friars scored five of the last six points to win the set, 25-21 and tie the match at two apiece.
SET 5:
The Pirates struck early in the decisive fifth set, scoring four of the first five points and forcing a Providence timeout. After the Friars cut the lead to 4-3, Seton Hall went on a 7-1 run, and a kill by Hennigan put it in front, 11-4, and made Providence spend their second timeout. A kill by Thelen put The Hall in match point, 14-8, and a Friars service error won the match for the Pirates. The Pirates had a match-high .429 attack percentage in set five.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 when they return to Walsh Gymnasium to host BIG EAST rival DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
