Rodriguez's Career High 33 Leads SHU Past DePaul
2/18/2018 4:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, N.J. - Senior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a career-high 33 points and made some clutch free throws at the end while senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) notched 16 points and 19 rebounds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team defeated DePaul, 82-77, Sunday on Kids Day at Prudential Center.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Seton Hall (18-9, 7-7 BIG EAST), which swept the season series with DePaul (10-16, 3-11 BIG EAST) for a third straight year.
Rodriguez was 12-for-21 from the field, 4-for-9 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Delgado's numbers gave him his 68th career double-double and 18th of the season, and he added four assists and three steals.Â
Turning Point
Seton Hall led for nearly the entire contest, building an early 12-point lead before settling for a two-point advantage at halftime. In the second half, the Pirates never led by more than nine points, and they started to feel the heat with 8:40 left when DePaul's Marin Maric made a three to make it a 60-54 game.
But that's when Rodriguez took over. He made three consecutive paint buckets to keep The Hall on pace with DePaul and keep it a six-point game. Then when DePaul cut it to three, he drove to the lane and instead of risking a charge call, he adjusted and passed to an open Delgado, who converted the layup. Rodriguez then made another jumper at 3:39, and he hit the back-breaking three-pointer at 2:08 to put The Hall up nine, 75-66.
DePaul found its way back to within two, 79-77, but Rodriguez sank four free throws in the final 37 seconds to seal victory.
