PROVIDENCE - Different day, different venue, but all that mattered was getting the W.
Senior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 25 points and sophomore Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) added 20 as the Seton Hall men's basketball team defeated Providence, 89-77, in a game that started Wednesday night at Dunkin' Donuts Center, was suspended due with 13:03 remaining due to unsafe floor conditions and was resumed Thursday afternoon at Providence's Alumni Hall.
Seton Hall (19-9, 8-7 BIG EAST) has won two in a row to create a three-way tie in the BIG EAST standings with Creighton and Providence, just a half-game behind Butler, who is 9-7. The Pirates now hold the tiebreaker over the Friars, having swept the regular season series.
Carrington scored 14 of his 25 points during the resumed portion of the game. Powell made four three-pointers and had four assists. Senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to collect his NCAA-leading 69th career double-double. Senior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) had 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Turning Point
In Wednesday's portion of the game, the Pirates and Friars were sluggish early as fouls dominated the action. The Hall finally gained some traction, ending the half on a 22-12 run over the final eight minutes. Rodriguez hit a three at 6:46 to tie the game and then another at 6:08 to give the Pirates the lead, 25-22. The lead grew to eight after Carrington picked off a Kyron Cartwright pass and took it to the rack for a fast break layup and a 39-31 advantage before settling for a 39-34 lead at the break.
Powell quickly gave Seton Hall a nine-point lead with a pair of triples early in the second half. It was a four-point lead when the Pirates reeled off a 9-3 run as Delgado delivered a three-point play, and Powell made an acrobatic three-pointer in the process of being fouled for a four-point play. Powell's layup at 13:37 was answered by an Alpha Diallo three-pointer to make the score 56-47 when the game was stopped due to the poor court conditions.
On Thursday, the Pirates got the lead back up to 12 before the Friars started a furious rally with a 14-3 run that culminated with Cartwright draining a three-pointer at 8:50 to make it a one-point game, 59-58.
The Pirates did a good job bouncing back from PC's run as Sanogo knocked down a huge three-pointer in front of the Pirates bench to put The Hall back up by four, 62-58. Then it was the Carrington show as he hit a pair of "and one" baskets that were sandwiched around a Powell triple, pushing The Hall to a 71-61 lead.
Providence got within six again, but Carrington finished off the Friars with a dagger jumper in the lane near the end of the shot clock and only 1:25 remaining. The Hall then went 8-for-10 at the free throw line to ice it.Â
