SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (15-14, 7-11 BIG EAST) pushed the top team in the BIG EAST to the brink, but eventually fell to regular season champion DePaul (23-7, 15-3 BIG EAST) by a score of 72-68. The contest served as Senior Day for The Hall's senior captain JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas), who hit four 3-pointers in her final regular season contest at Walsh Gym.
With the result, the Pirates finish alone in seventh in the BIG EAST standings. The Hall will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, March 3 against 10-seed Xavier.
Jackson finished with 12 points as one of four Pirates in double-figures, with Nicole Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) leading the Pirates with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Taylor Brown (Paterson, N.J.) had a strong 14-point effort off the bench and Inja Butina (Zagreb, Croatia) went for 12 points and a game-high six assists. For DePaul, Ashton Millender scored 16 and Chante Stonewall notched a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
How It Happened
The Hall led by five after a quarter but a 14-0 run for the Blue Demons in the second frame gave DPU an 11-point lead at the half. The Pirates cut the DePaul lead to 51-49 with two minutes to play in the third quarter by way of a Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) three-point play before going to the fourth down 57-51.
A 3-pointer for DPU's Tanita Allen pushed DePaul's edge back to 11 at 67-56 with 5:37 to go, but The Hall fought back once again. A triple for Jimenez made it 67-63 with 2:50 to play and forced a DePaul timeout. Both offenses went stagnant over the next two minutes before a Butina free throw made it a one-possession game at 67-64 in the final 30 seconds of regulation. Forced to foul, the Pirates saw DePaul connect on four-straight from the line to go back up five late and hold off the valiant comeback bid.
