NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball seniors Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) and Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) have both been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District II for their achievements during the 2017-18 regular season, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. District II represents Div. I teams from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Since 2004 (the earliest data currently available), Seton Hall has now earned 11 All-District II selections and six during head coach Kevin Willard's tenure. It's the third time since 2004 that the Pirates have placed two student-athletes on the All-District team in the same season (2012 - Herb Pope & Jordan Theodore; 2004 - Andre Barrett & Kelly Whitney).
Delgado was once again the best big man in the BIG EAST Conference, winning the league's rebounding championship for the third time in four years, becoming only the second player in conference history to be a three-time rebounding champion (Michael Smith, Providence, 1992-94). Overall, he averaged 13.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, and in conference games, he averaged 13.3 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. In conference games, he grabbed 57 more rebounds than anyone else in the league. He also finished the regular season with 21 double-doubles, seven more than any other conference student-athlete.
Nationally, Delgado ranks third in the nation with his 21 double-doubles and is also in the top 10 in overall rebounding and offensive rebounding. For his career, he is NCAA Div. I's active leader in career rebounds (1,414) and double-doubles (71). He is tied for 18th all-time in NCAA history in double-doubles.
Rodriguez was a dominant scorer for the Pirates, leading the team at 18.1 points per game, which ranks eighth in the BIG EAST Conference. He scored 20 or more points 11 times on the season, the most of any Pirate, and he had scored 20 or more in five consecutive games from Feb. 4 to Feb. 18 until an injury in the first half at Providence forced him out of the game. He was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 4 after averaging 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Seton Hall's pair of wins over nationally ranked teams, No. 22 Texas Tech and No. 17 Louisville, at which he hit the game-winning shot with 7.5 seconds remaining.
On the season, Rodriguez has averages of 18.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 50.4 percent from the field. In conference games, he averaged 18.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Seton Hall finished the regular season 21-10 overall and 10-8 in the BIG EAST Conference, earning a third-place finish for the third consecutive year. The Pirates are the No. 3 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament and will face No. 6 seed Butler Thursday night at Madison Square Garden at 9:30 p.m.Â
