Pantelas Fuels Pirates Through First Round
4/20/2018 3:56:00 PM | Women's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) fired a 4-over-par, 76, in Friday's first round and has the Seton Hall women's golf team in third place with two rounds remaining at the 2018 BIG EAST Championship.
Pantelas was 3-over-par at the turn, but turned her game up on the back nine. The senior was only 1-over par on her final nine holes, which included a birdie on the par-4, 13th hole. Pantelas is currently tied for fourth place overall and trails the individual leader, Georgetown's Jackie Eleey by five strokes.
Collectively, scores were higher than usual across the field due to high winds. Despite the bright sun, temperatures were cooler than normal on Friday and winds gusted to as high as 20 mph. As a team, the Pirates shot a 26-over-par, 314, which is more than 12 strokes higher than their scoring average for the year.
The Pirates trail Xavier for second place by only one stroke, but Georgetown has a commanding 14-stroke lead on the field entering Saturday's second round. The Hoyas boast both the individual leader and runner up after 18 holes.
The Pirates were consistent early in the round with four Pirates at 3-over-par at the turn. Their front nine scores could have been even better had it not been for struggles on holes No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9. In fact, only Kness avoided a bogey on the par-4 ninth hole, settling for a par.
On the back nine, the Pirates had trouble specifically with holes No. 14 and No. 17. Only Pantelas survived the 14th hole without a blemish, and all five Pirate golfers registered a bogey or double-bogey on No. 17. That hole, a long par-5 with a tricky pin placement, had the highest stroke average across the field by almost a stroke and a half.
Another Pirate that is currently in the top-10 is sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.). Staudt was one of two Pirates to record a pair of birdies on the round and is currently tied for seventh place following her 6-over-par, 78. Consistent throughout the day, Staudt was 3-over par on both the front and back nine. She also finished strong, shooting just 1-over-par over her final four holes.
Sophomore Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) and freshman Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.), started strong but struggled down the stretch. Both registered double-bogeys on the infamous 17th hole and finished with an 8-over-par, 80.
Sophomore Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) rounded out the Pirate lineup and shot an 11-over-par, 83, on Friday. She only had one double-bogey, but needed an extra stroke eight times between holes No. 7 and No. 17.
