Win, Pirates Make Move in Day Two at BIG EAST
4/21/2018 3:53:00 PM | Women's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) fired a 1-over-par, 73, in Saturday's second round and the Seton Hall women's golf team climbed to second place of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship with 18 holes remaining.
Win shaved seven strokes off her first round score to card the lowest round of the tournament so far for the Pirates. She was 2-under-par through 13 holes, but slipped a bit late, bogeying three of the final five. Still, her dazzling round puts her in a tie for fourth place with a 9-over-par, 80-73-153 entering Sunday's final round.
Collectively, the Pirates had the best round of the field in round two. They shaved off 12 strokes from their first round score to finish with a 14-over-par, 302. They gained four strokes on Georgetown, and cut the Hoya lead to 11 strokes with 18 holes left to play. Through two rounds, The Hall is 40-over-par with a 314-302-616. Georgetown is 29-over-par. The Pirates were able to leapfrog Xavier in the standings. The Musketeers are 46-over par.
Senior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) played well again, shooting a 3-over-par, 75, capped by a thrilling 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th green. Pantelas started her round with nine straight pars. She remains the Pirates' leader in the clubhouse after two rounds at 7-over-par with a 76-75-151. Pantelas is in third place among all individuals and trails Georgetown's Christina Parsells by three strokes for the lead.
After a crazy, up-and-down start to her round, sophomore Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) turned in a fine effort in her second career BIG EAST Championship round. Kness didn't register her first par until the eighth hole. She started her round with a double-bogey hole No. 1, but then made up for it with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 2 and No. 3. However, she tallied bogeys on holes No. 4 and No. 5, and then double-bogeyed No. 6 before birdying No. 7.
From there, Kness only had one blemish, a bogey on No. 13. She was 2-under-par over the final 12 holes of the afternoon to finish with a 2-over-par, 74. Through two rounds, she is tied for fifth with a 10-over-par, 80-74-154.
Sophomore Sammie Staudt's (Coatesville, Pa.) round got off the a rocky start with a 3-over-par, 8, on the par-5, third hole, but she was able to bounce back, playing consistent golf and birdying holes No. 6, No. 11 and No. 13 to improve to +4. Down the stretch however, Staudt had a trio of double-bogeys to finish at 10-over-par with an 82. Through two rounds, she is 16-over-par with a 78-82-160.
Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) started her round with three straight bogeys, but then she reeled off six straight pars. In fact, she played even golf from the fourth hole through the 16th hole, but then fell victim to the infamous 17th hole. Sager shot a 5-over-par, 10, on that hole, before parring hole No. 18 to finish with an 8-over-par, 80.
Through two rounds, Sager is 19-over-par with an 83-80-163.
A day after four of the five Pirates bogeyed the ninth hole, four of the Pirates parred it on Saturday. The only collectively tough hole was again the par-5, 17th monstrosity. Four of the five Pirates bogeyed or worse on No. 17, but Kness was actually able to birdie it. Her birdie is the only score better than a bogey for the Pirates so far this tournament on that hole.
