LOS ANGELES - Seton Hall men's basketball senior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) has been named the recipient of the 2018 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the National Center of the Year, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Friday at the annual College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's show that aired on ESPN2. Delgado, who accepted the award from the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself, is the first men's basketball student-athlete at Seton Hall to ever win a national individual award. Delgado's fellow finalists for the award were Isaac Haas of Purdue, Jock Landale of Saint Mary's, Brandon McCoy of UNLV and Thomas Welsh of UCLA.
Delgado was once again the best big man in the BIG EAST Conference, winning the league's rebounding championship for the third time in four years, becoming only the second player in conference history to be a three-time rebounding champion (Michael Smith, Providence, 1992-94). No BIG EAST student-athlete came within 90 total rebounds of Delgado this past season, and in conference games, no one came within 50 of him as he pulled down 214 in 18 games (11.9 RPG). Overall, he averaged 13.6 points and 11.8 rebounds on the season, giving him a season average double-double for the second straight year. He had 22 double-doubles in 2017-18, which ranked third in the nation. He also finished fourth in the country in overall rebounding and sixth in offensive rebounding (4.03).
Some of Delgado's top performances of the season included a 19-point, 11-rebound effort in a win over Indiana in the Gavitt Tip-Off Games, 18 points, 14 rebounds and five assists in a huge comeback win over Creighton to open BIG EAST play, a career-high 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in a road win at Butler, 16 points, 19 rebounds, four assists and three steals in a home win vs. DePaul and 21 points and 10 rebounds on his Senior Night at Prudential Center in a win over Butler.
Delgado perhaps saved his best for last in 2017-18. On March 17, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, he posted 24 points and a career-high 23 rebounds against Kansas. It was the first 20-20 game in the NCAA Tournament since 2012, and the 23 rebounds were the most anyone has grabbed in an NCAA Tournament game since 1975. The 23 rebounds also easily surpassed Seton Hall's NCAA Tournament single-game record, which was previously 15.
For his career, Delgado is graduating as the NCAA Div. I's active leader in career rebounds (1,455) and double-doubles (72) and is tied for 16th all-time in NCAA history in double-doubles. Since the creation of NCAA Div. I, II and III in 1973, Delgado has the seventh-most career rebounds in NCAA Div. I history, the fourth-most of any student-athlete who played for a school in a power-six basketball conference.
In BIG EAST lore, Delgado broke the conference's career rebounds record on Jan. 28, 2018, a record that stood for 28 years and was previously held by Syracuse's Derrick Coleman, and finished his 72-game league career with 828 rebounds. He also holds the BIG EAST single-season rebounds record, grabbing 253 during his junior season, and he's the only BIG EAST student-athlete to ever grab 20 or more rebounds in back-to-back conference games, a feat he accomplished in January 2017.
In Seton Hall history, Delgado is first all-time in games played (132) and games started (131), second in rebounds, behind only 1950s legend Walter Dukes, 16th in points scored (1,593), 10th in field goals made (644), third in field goal percentage (.538) and 15th in blocks (101).
