
Thelen Sparkles in Setback to Dartmouth

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Senior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a team-high 16 kills and only three attack errors, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to Dartmouth, 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 23-25), in the opening match of the Hofstra Asics Invitational on Friday.
Junior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a career-high 36 assists to go with a team-best 13 digs.
SET 1:
The first set was a back-and-forth affair that featured seven ties and five lead changes. Trailing 11-8, Seton Hall went on a 7-2 run, and a Dartmouth attack error boosted The Hall's lead to 15-13. The Big Green however, responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 20-15 advantage, and they went on to a 25-19 first set win. The Pirates fell despite having an identical .242 attack percentage as Dartmouth.
SET 2:
Seton Hall surged out of the break and scored eight of the first nine points of set two. But Dartmouth rallied with a 10-2 run to take the lead, 11-10. Trailing 22-18, the Pirates scored three straight to cut the lead to one, and force a Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green regrouped though, and scored three of the final four points of the set to win, 25-22, and claim a two-set match lead.
SET 3:
The third set was the closest set of the match with neither team grabbing a lead greater than two points. The Pirates were the first to reach 20 points as a kill by Thelen gave them a 20-18 advantage, but Dartmouth bounced back by scoring six of the next eight points to enter match point at 24-22. A kill by Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) staved off one match point, but the Big Green got the winning kill on the next point.

The Pirates will return to action tomorrow when they continue play at the Hofstra Invitational in Hempstead, N.Y. The Hall will face Columbia at 3:00 p.m. and host Hofstra at 7:00 p.m.
