
Powell, Defense Shine as No. 12 Pirates Take Care of Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS - Senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored a game-high 26 points, and the No. 12 Seton Hall men's basketball team's defense held Saint Louis to 35 percent shooting as the Pirates took down the Billikens, 83-66, Sunday afternoon in front of 9,611 fans at Chaifetz Arena.Â
The Pirates led the game wire-to-wire and went up by as many as 29 points after playing some strong defense against the Billikens.
Seton Hall is now 3-1 on the early season.
Turning Point
Seton Hall immediately set the tone with a game-opening 10-0 run as the defense held Saint Louis to 0-for-5 shooting from the field and two turnovers in the first 5:03 of the game. The lead then quickly got up to 15 before Saint Louis closed to within eight, 32-24, with 4:07 to go first half.
But Powell put an end to Saint Louis' run with a three-pointer at 3:56, making the lead double digits again. Seton Hall went into halftime up 15 and never took its foot off the pedal, holding the Billikens scoreless for a stretch of 7:27 while building a 29-point advantage.

- Seton Hall shot 40 percent for the game, making 26 of 65 attempts. The team was 34.5 percent from three (10-for-29) and a season-high 80.8 percent at the free throw line (21-for-26).
- Saint Louis was held to 35.8 percent from the field (19-for-53) and 35.7 percent from three (5-for-14). The Billikens struggled at the free throw line, making just 23 of 41 there (56.1 percent).
- The Pirates had 18 assists on their 26 field goals made and only committed 10 turnovers in the game, only two in the second half.
- The Hall out-rebounded Saint Louis, 46-38. Six different Pirates grabbed at least four boards, led by sophomore Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) who had eight.
- Powell led all scorers with his 26 points. He was 6-for-18 from the field, 4-for-11 from three and 10-for-12 at the charity stripe. He also had six rebounds and three assists.
- Junior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) had a well-rounded effort with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
- Rhoden finished with seven points, eight rebounds and two assists.

- Seton Hall won its first-ever game against Saint Louis and is now 1-3 all-time against the Billikens.
- The Pirates start 1-0 in true road games for the third time in the last four seasons.Â
- The Hall is now 158-54 all-time when ranked by the Associated Press and 16-3 all-time when specifically ranked No. 12.
- Powell is now on the cusp of cracking Seton Hall's all-time scoring top 10. He is at 1,753 points, just 36 away from tying Walter Dukes (1950-53) for 10th.Â
