NEW YORK - Senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 31.5 points in two contests, the league office announced Monday.
Powell had the eyes of the nation on him last Thursday night as the No. 12 Pirates hosted the No. 3 Michigan State Spartans. Playing on a less than 100 percent healthy ankle, Powell lit up the Spartans and wowed the Prudential Center crowd with 37 points, including six three-pointers. The 37 points were Powell's second-most in a game ever and the 10th 30-point performance of his career. Although the Pirates narrowly lost the game, Powell was the highlight of the evening.
The senior then rallied his team to forget the Michigan State defeat and soundly crushed Saint Louis on the road, 83-66, and he scored 26 points in the game, connecting on four three-pointers and going 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Powell is averaging 22.5 points this season, good for 22nd in the NCAA and second in the BIG EAST, and that's despite the fact that he did not score in the Stony Brook game due to injury.Â
Powell and the Pirates, ranked No. 13 in this week's Associated Press top 25, are 3-1 to start the season and will host Florida A&M Saturday at Prudential Center at noon.Â
