
Pirates Drop Five-Point Decision At Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team (14-14) fell by a score of 73-68 at Villanova (17-10, 8-8 BIG EAST) on Sunday at the Finneran Pavilion. Inja Butina (Zagreb, Croatia) and Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) combined to score 41 points for the Pirates in the setback.
The Hall saw Villanova get hot from 3-point range early and faced a double-digit halftime deficit, going down as many as 21 in the fourth quarter. The Pirates never quit and got back within two possessions in the final minutes of regulation before ultimately succumbing.
Butina set a new career-high with 23 points and dished out eight assists, while Samuels went for 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Nicole Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) was the third Pirate in double-digits with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. For the Wildcats, Jannah Tucker led the way with 17 points on her Senior Day and Mary Gedaka posted a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Pirates took an early 9-5 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a 12-0 run to take an eight-point lead and force a Seton Hall timeout with 2:18 to go in the opening frame. VU would go on to hit seven of its first 11 from 3-point range, building its first half lead to as many as 22 and going into the break up 39-25.
The Pirates came out as aggressors in the third quarter, out-scoring VU 10-4 to pull within eight at 43-35 before a timeout with 5:56 to go in the frame. Samuels scored six points during the spurt. Villanova answered after the stop, scoring the next seven points to build its lead back to 15 before the media timeout in the frame.
The Wildcats held a 57-40 lead after three quarters and used an 8-4 start to the fourth quarter to push its lead back up to 21. The Pirates continued to fight until the final whistle and pulled got as close as five by way of a game-ending 20-5 run.
