SAINT LOUIS - The Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) trophy case continues to get larger. The junior guard, coming off a historic regular season for the Seton Hall men's basketball team, has been named to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District II team, the USBWA announced Tuesday. District II encompasses New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, and Powell was the lone selection from a school residing in the Garden State.
Powell becomes the 14th Seton Hall selection to the USBWA All-District II team since 2004 (no data available prior), and this is the fourth straight year that the Pirates have had at least one selection.
The junior guard was dominant all season long, averaging 22.6 points per game, eclipsing 20 points 19 out of 30 games, reaching 30 points seven times and scoring a career-high 40 points in a game vs. Grand Canyon.
Powell rose to the occasion when his team needed him the most. He scored 28 points in The Hall's win over No. 9 Kentucky. He had 27 points in a road win over Maryland. He had 25 points and a career-high eight assists in a road win at Xavier. He poured in 31 points in a win over Providence to snap a four-game losing streak. Then this past week, he had 34 points and five assists in a win over No. 16 Marquette and followed up with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory over No. 23 Villanova.
In addition to finishing second in the conference in scoring, Powell was second in steals (2.0 per game), third in three-pointers made per game (3.0) and fourth in free throw shooting (.855).Â
Powell's year has been one of the greatest in Seton Hall single-season history. He has 679 points, which is eighth-highest in Pirates single-season history and fifth-best in the BIG EAST era (since 1979). His 90 three-pointers made are also good for eighth in single-season history. His 159 free throws made are tied for 15th all-time.
Powell is also making his mark in the career record book. He is now 19th all-time in scoring with 1,558 points and fourth all-time in three-pointers made with 252.
Seton Hall finished the regular season 18-12 overall and 9-9 in the BIG EAST, marking the fourth straight year that the Pirates have achieved a .500 or better league record and a third-place finish. The Pirates are the No. 3 seed in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament and will play No. 6 seed Georgetown on Thursday at Madison Square Garden at 9:30 p.m. The game will be carried on FS1.
