Powell Goes for 35 in Double OT Setback at Georgetown
3/2/2019 10:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - Junior Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 35 points in 45 minutes of action, and the Seton Hall men's basketball team twice came up with clutch last-second shots to extend its game against Georgetown, but the Hoyas ended the second overtime on a 6-0 run to defeat the Pirates, 77-71, in a wild BIG EAST game at Capital One Arena.
There were 10 ties and 15 lead changes as Georgetown improved to 18-11 on the season and 8-8 in the BIG EAST while Seton Hall fell to 16-12 overall and 7-9 in the league, ending a streak of three consecutive seasons with a winning conference record.
Powell's 35 points are second-most in his career and most in a BIG EAST game. He became just the 14th Pirate to ever score 600 points in a single season, and he became only the 31st Seton Hall student-athlete to score 1,500 career points.
Sophomore Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) turned in his third career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) nearly missed his first with nine points and nine boards.
This was Seton Hall's first double overtime game since Dec. 31, 2013.
Turning Point
It was a wild affair that saw Seton Hall holding a four-point lead with just under five minutes to go and the Pirates leading by two with under two minutes remaining. However, the Hoyas turned the tables on second-chance opportunities as Jessie Govan converted a put-back to tie, and then Josh Leblanc had a second-cahcne dunk off a James Akinjo miss, putting the Hoyas up with 1:27 to play, 59-57.
After both teams got defensive stops, Powell attempted a three that missed, and Rhoden cleaned up the glass to get a second possession. In a well designed play, Powell got the ball to senior Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria), who had converted the paint layup, tying the game up with 23.4 seconds to go.
Seton Hall then locked down on defense, and Govan's game-winner rimmed out to send the game to overtime.
Georgetown was up by as many as four in the first overtime, but Powell came up huge with a three with 2:14 to go. Both teams then struggled with turnovers and misses. It came down to Govan getting fouled, missing the first free throw and making the second to put Georgetown up 66-64. The Pirates then came back down and Powell found Rhoden underneath for another tying bucket with just 1.2 seconds left.
In the second overtime, Powell put the Pirates up one with a layup at 3:36, but Govan answered with a huge three-pointer to make it 71-69. On another second chance opportunity and just one second on the shot clock, Mamukelashvili received the in-bounds pass and swished an elbow jumper to tie the game at 71-71.
However, that's when Seton Hall went cold, going 0-for-3 from the field, 0-for-2 at the free throw line and turning it over once in the final 2:04. The Hoyas took advantage of their size to grab offensive rebounds, the killer one coming with 20 seconds to go on a layup after Akinjo had missed a three.
