South Orange, N.J. – Seton Hall Athletics is a leader among its peers in academic and athletic success, and for a ninth consecutive year, the department is concluding the academic year with a record-high cumulative grade point average. After Spring 2019, Seton Hall student-athletes have combined for a 3.431 cumulative GPA, an improvement from 3.426 after Fall 2018 and 3.405 from Spring 2018.
The incredible ascent in academic success dates back to the end of the 2010-11 academic year, when the department's cumulative GPA was at 3.174.
In addition, 157 student-athletes made the Seton Hall Dean's List during the Spring 2019 semester, representing over 63 percent of the student-athlete population. To achieve Dean's List designation, students must have a 3.4 GPA or higher during the semester.
"Finishing another academic year with a record-high grade point average is once again a testament to the hard work our student-athletes are investing toward their futures," Seton Hall Vice President and Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons said. "Our student-athletes manage their academic and athletic responsibilities very well, and we believe that their hard work today will result in tremendous success in their future chosen paths. Congratulations to all our student-athletes, academic support staffers, coaches and administrators on this accomplishment."
Seton Hall student-athletes also posted very strong individual semester and year-end grades as the department combined to deliver a 3.438 Spring 2019 semester GPA and a 3.418 year-end GPA (Fall and Spring semesters combined). Both numbers represent an increase from this time last year when student-athletes had a 3.422 Spring 2018 GPA and a 3.396 2017-18 year-end GPA. All 14 programs delivered 2018-19 GPAs above 3.00.
The women's golf team holds the highest cumulative GPA of the 14 Pirates varsity teams at 3.664, and men's soccer has the highest cumulative GPA of the six male sports at 3.510. Eight of the 14 programs have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and 13 of the 14 programs are above 3.00. Men's basketball had the largest year-to-year cumulative GPA improvement of the 14 teams, going from 3.010 at the end of 2017-18 to 3.157 at the end of 2018-19.
