
Pirates Drop Akron Invitational Opener to EKU

AKRON, OHIO – Freshman Raygan Murray (Rocky River, Ohio) recorded a team-high 14 digs, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in the opening round of the Akron Invitational to Eastern Kentucky, 3-0 (33-35, 17-25, 11-15), on Friday.

SET 1:
The first set was one of the closest in recent memory for Seton Hall. The opening frame featured 13 ties and nine lead changes in an epic set that went well beyond the normal victory plateau of 25 points. Seton Hall led for much of the early going, and a kill by sophomore Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) put The Hall on top, 18-13. An attack error by EKU gave the Pirates a 23-21 lead, but the Colonels responded with three straight points to enter set point, 24-23. From there, the set was tied 10 more times until a pair of Seton Hall attack errors with the score tied at 33 ended the frame in EKU's favor.Â

A service ace by Elizabeth Sottung (Westfield, N.J.) gave The Hall an early 3-1 lead in set two, but Eastern Kentucky quickly took control thereafter. A 12-3 run by the Colonels put them on top 13-6, and they never trailed again. A kill by Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) cut EKU's lead to 22-17, but Eastern Kentucky scored the last three straight points to win, 25-17.

Seton Hall never led in the final set as Eastern Kentucky. With the score tied at four, Eastern Kentucky went on an 11-1 run to take a commanding 15-5 advantage. EKU went on to win the final set, 25-11.

Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow as it continues play at the Akron Invitational. The Pirates will take on Saint Francis at 10:00 a.m., followed by tournament host Akron at 7:00 p.m.
