LAST WEEKEND
Seton Hall dropped two of three contests at the Akron Invitational last weekend in Ohio. Freshman Raygan Murray (Rocky River, Ohio) recorded a team-high 14 digs, but the Pirates fell in the opening round of the event to Eastern Kentucky, 3-0 (33-35, 17-25, 11-15), on Friday.Â
Â
Both senior Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) recorded 12 kills as the Pirates bounced back with a sweep of Saint Francis, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15), on Saturday. Gasser had 12 kills, only two attack errors and an attack percentage of .417. Wilkins had 12 kills, a .320 attack percentage and a career-high seven digs. Senior Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) had a season-high 34 assists to go with eight digs.
Â
For the second straight match, Gasser led the Pirates in kills and Wilkins had a strong match, but the Pirates fell in three sets to Akron, 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 22-25) in the tournament finale on Saturday night.
Â
Gasser had a team-best 13 kills, only three attack errors and a .357 attack percentage. Wilkins recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and a career-best 10 digs.
Â
For her efforts last week, Gasser was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Â
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
Seton Hall and William & Mary will meet for the fifth time in history on Friday, with both teams having won two prior contests. Most recently, The Hall swept the Griffins at the Cavalier Classic on Sept. 21, 2013.
Â
William & Mary is coming off a rough season in 2018, finishing the campaign with a 5-20 overall record and a 12-match losing streak.Â
Â
This season, William & Mary was unanimously picked to finish in the basement of the nine-team Colonial Athletic Association. The Griffins however, have nearly already reached their win total from a year ago, currently sporting a 4-4 record. Seton Hall and William & Mary have already had three common opponents. Both the Griffins and Pirates lost to Morgan State in five sets, and both defeated Iona. However, the Pirates were swept by Akron, while William & Mary swept the Zips.Â
Â
William & Mary have also already played a pair of BIG EAST opponents, losing in four sets to Xavier and being swept by Georgetown last weekend.
Â
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON
Seton Hall and George Mason will meet for only the third time in history, with the teams having split the prior two meetings. It's been over 14 years since the programs have last met, a 3-0 victory for the Patriots in Fairfax.
Â
George Mason is coming off a 10-15 season in 2018, which included a first-round loss to Saint Louis in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.
Â
This season, George Mason was picked to finish seventh in the 10-team Atlantic 10, and enters the weekend with a 3-6 record. The Patriots and Seton Hall have had one common opponent so far, Saint Francis, which both teams defeated.  The Pirates won in straight sets, while George Mason won in four.
Â
The Patriots have also already faced one BIG EAST opponent, falling to Providence in straight sets on Sept. 1.
Â
SCOUTING WAKE FOREST
Seton Hall and Wake Forest will close the tournament with the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Â
The Demon Deacons are coming off a 10-20 record in 2018 and failed to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Â
This season, Wake Forest is picked to finish last in the 15-team ACC, but they've won seven of their first eight matches. Seton Hall and Wake Forest haven't played any common opponents yet this year. The Demon Deacons are coming off a split performance at the Elon/Wake Forest Tournament. They swept Furman on Saturday, but dropped a five-set contest at Elon on Sunday.  Â
