NEW YORK - Seton Hall men's basketball All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) was honored within the BIG EAST, regionally and nationally after leading the Pirates to a pair of wins and back into the national rankings. After averaging 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in two victories, Powell was named BIG EAST Player of the Week, Met Writers Player of the Week and Citizen Naismith Player of the Week.
This was Powell's third BIG EAST Player of the Week honor of the season and second consecutive. He also now has five for his career, tying him with Terry Dehere (1989-93) for most in program history with five.
Powell made eight of his first 13 shots in an 83-71 road win at Xavier on Jan. 8, finishing with a game-high 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists. He scored nine points in Seton Hall's 21-5 mid-first-half run that allowed the Pirates to take the lead for good.
Three days later, Powell delivered a team-high 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the 69-55 home victory over Marquette. His stepback three-pointer in the first half brought the Pirates back from an 11-point deficit, and his dish to Romaro Gill late in the second half on a pick-and-roll helped stop a Golden Eagles comeback.
The two 20-point games were Powell's 39th and 40th of his career.
A candidate for the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy and Jerry West Award, Powell is averaging 21.5 points per game this season, good for second in the BIG EAST and 11th in the nation. In the 12 games he's been able to complete without leaving for injury, he's averaging 24.6 points per game. He has helped The Hall to a 12-4 start overall and a 4-0 mark in the BIG EAST, only the second time in program history it was started conference play with four straight wins.
Powell and No. 18 Seton Hall face No. 5 Butler in BIG EAST action Wednesday night inside Hinkle Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
