NEW YORK - After averaging 21.0 points and leading the Seton Hall men's basketball team to a 2-0 start to BIG EAST play, senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
This is Powell's fourth career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor and second this season. He was also the league's top player back on Nov. 18, 2019. Powell is now one BIG EAST Player of the Week award away from tying Terry Dehere (1989-93) for most in program history with five.
Powell averaged 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in Seton Hall's 2-0 week to begin conference play. He returned from a two-game absence to drop 27 points in a 74-66 win at DePaul, including 18 in the second half to spearhead a comeback victory over the Blue Demons. He scored 10 of his 27 points just in the final five minutes to push Seton Hall into the lead for good. He also had five steals on the night, helping the Seton Hall defense hold DePaul to nine points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Then in the 78-62 home victory over Georgetown, he was responsible for eight points in a 10-0 late second half run, including a back-breaking three on the fastbreak with 5:45 to go, to squash a Hoyas comeback. He finished with 15 points and a season-high six assists.
Powell, who is a candidate for the Wooden, Naismith, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West Awards, is averaging 21.2 points per game on the season, which is good for second in the BIG EAST and 18th in the nation. When only including the 10 games he's been able to finish without injury, he is averaging 24.8 points per contest.
Powell and the Pirates, ranked No. 25 in this week's USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll, are 10-4 overall, 2-0 in the BIG EAST and will play at Xavier Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m., live on FS1 and WMCA 570 AM.
