NEW YORK - The Seton Hall men's basketball team, vying for a sixth-straight 20-win season and top-three finish in the BIG EAST, has been picked to finish fifth in the conference, according to the league's 10 other head coaches, the BIG EAST announced Wednesday on BIG EAST Virtual Media Day.
Head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. The Pirates accrued 67 points in the voting, two points behind Connecticut, which was selected fourth in its first season back in the BIG EAST since 2012-13. Villanova was selected the conference favorite, followed by Creighton and Providence.
More often than not, Seton Hall either meets or exceeds the coaches' preseason predictions. In the previous seasons, Seton Hall has exceeded their preseason poll rank 20 times and has finished in the exact spot it was predicted to land 11 times. Only 10 other times out of the 41 has The Hall not met its preseason expectation. In head coach Kevin Willard's 10 seasons, the Pirates have met or exceeded their preseason poll rank seven times. This includes the 2019-20 season, when The Hall was the preseason favorite to win the conference and finished the year capturing a share of its first BIG EAST regular season championship since 1993.
The Pirates are coming off a tremendous 2019-20 season that saw the program go 21-9 overall and 13-5 in the BIG EAST, capturing a share of the league's championship and finishing No. 15 in the Associated Press top 25. They return 44 percent of their scoring, 63 percent of their rebounding and 50 percent of their three-pointers made from last season's championship squad. Plus, the Pirates gain the services of two transfers who have combined for over 2,000 career points at the Div. I level.
