Providence, R.I. - The No. 10 Seton Hall men's basketball team fell behind Providence, 34-9, roared back to cut the deficit to two at 52-50, but ultimately ran out of gas in a 74-71 defeat to the Friars Saturday night at Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) scored 27 points in the loss and moved into third place all-time in Seton Hall scoring history in the process, surpassing Jeremy Hazell (2007-11).
Seton Hall (18-7) still stands in first place in the BIG EAST standings at 10-3, one game ahead of 9-4 Creighton and one-and-a-half ahead of 8-4 Villanova.
Turning Point
Seton Hall got off to a very sluggish start, falling behind a Providence squad that made nine consecutive field goal attempts between 15:51 and 9:30. It was 34-9 Friars with 7:16 remaining in the first half.
But the Pirates answered with an 18-7 run to end the first half as Powell scored the team's last seven points before halftime to make it 41-27.
The Pirates then extended their run to 41-18 with a strong second-half start. Powell drilled a triple to pull the Pirates to within two, 47-45, only to be answered by Providence's Alpha Diallo, who buried a three on the next possession.Â
Senior Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) pulled The Hall to within two again, 52-50, on a conventional three-point play on a drive to the basket with 8:04 to play, but the Pirates couldn't get a stop on defense on the next possession to keep the momentum and then went cold on offense, not hitting another field goal attempt until there was 1:31 to play.
