After 17 grueling contests, it all comes down to this. Win and Seton Hall stands alone. Lose and Seton Hall has to share a piece of the pie.
Either way, Seton Hall is a champion of the 2019-20 BIG EAST regular season, an accomplishment that Seton Hall hasn't seen in 27 years. But of course, winning it outright would be more special. Especially for this group that was pegged to win the conference from day one.
So it comes down to winning in a tough road environment. But the Pirates know this road. They've been down it so many times before. And a 7-1 record in BIG EAST games outside of Newark shows what they're capable of.
Saturday's game is Seton Hall's fifth this season on the FOX Broadcast Network, and Kevin Kugler will call the game alongside Donny Marshall. Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin handle the radio side of things on WMCA 570 AM, simulcast on Sirius 133, XM 201Â and the Pirate Sports Network.Â
Three Things to Know About Saturday's Clash in Omaha
1. What was Learned from the First Matchup?
For the most part, it was pretty even. Creighton made eight threes, Seton Hall made seven. Creighton made 21 free throws. Seton Hall made 17. Second chance points were 19-13 in Seton Hall's favor. The widest margin seems to be in fastbreak points as Creighton led 17-10. At the end there were 15 ties and 20 lead changes in the Feb. 12 game. So you had two great teams battling it out, and the Bluejays ended up on top.Â
2. Pace is Important
How do you stop an offensive juggernaut? The Pirates have to limit Creighton's possessions and that starts by using clock and elevating their halfcourt offense and it continues by taking care of the basketball and getting back on defense. The worst thing would be to allow Creighton to get out in transition.
3. Mamu is on Fire!
Seton Hall lost to Creighton by five points, and perhaps one underlying reason is because Sandro Mamukelashvili only played 15 minutes in the defeat. He was in foul trouble all night, and yet he scored 13 points. So he almost averaged one point per minute! Creighton does not have the size to handle Mamukelashvili's versatile offense, so can the Pirates 1) keep him on the floor longer and 2) make him a consistent weapon throughout? He's averaging 19.3 points and 8.8 rebounds over the last four games.
