NEW YORK - Senior All-America candidate Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) was unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST first team for a second year in a row, the conference office announced Sunday. Powell is only the second Seton Hall men's basketball player to ever place on to the All-BIG EAST first team multiple times and two years in a row, joining former Pirates legend Terry Dehere (1989-93).
Joining Powell in receiving honors is classmate Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.), who was named All-BIG EAST honorable mention.
Powell has had a dynamite senior season, leading Seton Hall to a wire-to-wire first-place finish in the BIG EAST, earning a share of the program's first regular season championship since 1993. While receiving the most attention on the defensive end from opponents, he is averaging 21.0 points per game, second-most in the BIG EAST, and 18th best in the country. In conference play, Powell was also second in the league in scoring at 20.9 points per game as well as tied for 10th in assists (3.4) and tied for eighth in steals (1.4).
Powell did his best work in hostile environments as he averaged 25.8 points in Seton Hall's nine BIG EAST road games, leading the Pirates to a 7-2 mark in those contests, the most conference road wins in program history. His top-three road efforts included a 34-point outburst in a win at Georgetown on Feb. 5, a 29-point effort in a comeback win at then-No. 5 Butler on Jan. 15 and a 28-point, five-assist game at Marquette on Feb. 29.
McKnight has been rock steady as Seton Hall's point guard in his senior season with overall averages of 11.9 points and 5.4 assists. He claimed the conference's statistical championship in assists by averaging 6.3 dimes in the 18 league games, becoming only the second-ever Pirate to do so (Shaheen Holloway, 1998). McKnight also upped his free throw shooting by over 20 percent from last season and is currently tied for fourth in the league at 85.0 percent. He has made 35 of his last 39 free throw attempts (.897), which spans the last eight games.
McKnight also has been one of the best defenders in the country, consistently guarding opponents' best scorers and helping Seton Hall hold opponents to 40.1 percent shooting, the second-best mark in the BIG EAST. In 17 of their last 26 games, Seton Hall has held an opponent below its season average for scoring.
Seton Hall is 21-9 overall and 13-5 in the BIG EAST. Winners of a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship, the Pirates will face Marquette in the quarterfinals of the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament, which takes place Thursday inside Madison Square Garden at 9:30 p.m.
