Springfield, Mass. - Senior guard Jared Rhoden (Bladwin, N.Y.) is one of 20 shooting guards on the watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the award's committee announced Tuesday.
Rhoden looks to become the second Pirate to receive the prestigious award following 2020 winner Myles Powell.
A versatile wing that has developed into a team leader over three seasons in South Orange, Rhoden has steadily improved statistically as he went from averaging 3.4 points per game as a freshman, 9.1 points as a sophomore, to 14.9 points as a junior. He also averaged 6.7 rebounds per contest and started in all 27 games last season. Rhoden was named to the BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament team after averaging 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in helping the Pirates reach the semifinals. In the quarterfinals against St. John's, Rhoden pulled down 16 rebounds, a total that matched a Seton Hall BIG EAST Tournament record. At the charity stripe, Rhoden led the Pirates with an .833 free throw shooting percentage and won the BIG EAST free throw shooting title with a .908 percentage in 19 conference games.
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
Including Rhoden, the Pirates return four of their top six scorers from last season, add four transfers who have combined for over 1,400 career Div. I points scored and bring in a top-25 rated freshman recruiting class that will help them once again compete for another conference championship and NCAA Tournament bid.
