
Pirates Fall to No. 16 Creighton in Three Sets

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) recorded a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to No. 16 Creighton, 3-0 (24-26, 15-25, 18-25), on Saturday.

Jakubowski had team-highs of 12 assists and 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season and 16th of her young career. Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a team-high seven kills.

SET 1:
Seton Hall came ready for the challenge of the No. 16-ranked team in the country in the opening set, which featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Trailing 19-15, the Pirates scored four straight and a kill by Katie Winkler (Troy, Wis.) tied the set at 19. The Bluejays took off again, however, and entered set point up 24-21. The Hall bounced back with three straight and a service ace by Cagla Bengi (Bursa, Turkey) tied the set at 24. The Pirates ran out of steam late though, and the Bluejays scored the last two points to win, 26-24.

Junior Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had four kills in the second set, but it wasn't enough as the Bluejays took control late. A kill by Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) cut The Hall's deficit to just 12-11, but Creighton responded with a 10-2 run to take a commanding 21-13 advantage. They went on to win, 25-15 as they limited The Hall to a .091 attack percentage.

The Pirates improved offensively, hitting .222 as a team, but Creighton was able to close out the match in set three. With the score tied at six, the Bluejays went on a 7-0 run to set the tone. A block by Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) cut The Hall's deficit to 17-10, but Creighton scored five of the next six points to take a commanding 22-11 lead. They went on to win, 25-18.

Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Cincinnati, Ohio for a BIG EAST Conference contest at Xavier. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.Â
