WASHINGTON - The Seton Hall men's basketball team overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to take a five-point second-half lead at Georgetown, but the Hoyas went on a 10-2 run to reclaim the lead and pulled away, 81-75, Saturday night at McDonough Arena. The loss snaps Seton Hall's four-game winning streak.
Senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) led the Pirates with 22 points. Senior Shavar Reynolds, Jr. (Manchester, N.J.) added 13 points.Â
Despite the defeat, Seton Hall still stands in third place in the BIG EAST with a 10-6 Â record and three games to go.
Turning Point
Seton Hall climbed out of first-half hole with a great start to the second half as Mamukelashvili helped spark a 7-0 run out of the gate. His three off a pass from junior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) put the Pirates on top, 40-38, and he then grabbed a rebound on an ensuing possession and started a fastbreak to senior Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) for a layup and a four-point advantage.
Seton Hall got the lead to five, 45-40, with 16:24 to go on Mamukelashvili's jumper, but that was the team's largest lead of the night. Georgetown reclaimed the lead on Jamorko Pickett's three-point play with 11:33 left to make it 54-53. Then with Georgetown up four, Donald Carey hit a corner three-pointer and was fouled on the play, resulting in a four-point play, and a 63-55 lead with 8:31 to go.
The Pirates managed to tie the game up again at 67-67, but history repeated itself with 4:39 remaining when Carey again sank a three-pointer, Georgetown's 10th of the night, and was fouled after releasing the ball. That four-point play made it 71-67.
The Hall had a chance to tie again with under four to go, but a turnover resulted in the Hoyas converting a layup to go back up four, and the Pirates couldn't recover.
