
Pirates Showcase Newcomers in Sweep of FDU, 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Three Pirates reached double-figures in kills and freshman setter Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) recorded a double-double as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, to open the 2021 season on Tuesday.

Junior Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) finished with 12 kills as did freshman Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.). Fellow newcomer Tsvetelina Ilieva (Sofia, Bulgaria) had 11 kills and nine digs.

Jakobowski notched her first double-double in her first collegiate game with team-highs of 33 assists and 10 digs.

SET 1:
Seton Hall took control early in the opening set, trailing only briefly at the start. With the score tied at four, the Pirates scored four straight to assume control. Fairleigh Dickinson cut the Pirates' lead to 9-7, but The Hall responded with five of the next seven points to widen its lead to 14-9. Leading 23-17, an FDU attack error put The Hall in set point, and a block by Ilieva and Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) was the set-winning point.

SET 2:
Although the second set was closer, the Pirates never trailed. Clinging to a slim 12-11 lead, Seton Hall scored five straight to grab a commanding 17-11 advantage. FDU closed to within three late, 23-20, but a kill by Ilieva put the Pirates in set point, and two points later, Lucas ended it.

SET 3:
The Pirates were dominant in the final set, attacking at a .485 clip with 18 kills and only two attack errors. Trailing 9-7, The Hall went on a 10-0 run, and a block by Turner and Madison Frusha (Huntsville, Texas) gave it a 17-9 lead. The Knights cut their deficit to 20-14, but the Pirates scored the final five points of the match, and Ilieva's 12th kill of the night capped the sweep.

Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, February 26 when it hosts Hofstra at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
