SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Freshman Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had a match-high 19 kills and classmate Taylor Jakubowski (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) picked up a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team was edged by Hofstra, 3-2, on Friday.
Â
Seton Hall led in the match, two sets to one, but Hofstra won set four, and withstood a furious Pirate rally to triumph in set five, 16-14. The Pride led set five, 13-6, only for The Hall to score seven straight points.
Â
Lucas had a career-high 19 kills to go with six digs and two blocks. Jakubowski finished just four kills shy of a triple-double, registering a match-high 42 assists, 15 digs and six kills. Sophomore Julia Wilkins (Mason, Ohio) also reached double-figures in kills, tallying 10 to go with four blocks and three digs.
Â
SET 1:
The first set was close from the start with neither team grabbing a lead of greater than four points throughout. Trailing 19-16, the Pirates scored five straight, and a kill by Emilee Turner (Kaysville, Utah) gave them a 21-19 lead and forced a Hofstra timeout. Out of the break, the Pride rallied with five straight points to enter set point at 24-21. Two points later, Hofstra won set one, 25-22.
Â
SET 2:
Seton Hall scored six of the first eight points of set two, but Hofstra bounced back with a 10-4 run to take a 12-10 advantage. Trailing 22-19, the Pirates scored four straight to take a 23-22 lead. After Hofstra twice tied the score at 23 and 24, a kill by Wilkins gave The Hall their second set point, and a kill by Turner ended the set in the Pirates favor, 26-24.
Â
SET 3:
Set three was tight as well, but with the score tied at 11, a kill by Jakubowski gave The Hall the lead, and the Pirates wouldn't relinquish it. Leading 20-19, Seton Hall scored four straight points to enter set point, 24-19. After Hofstra's Bianca Bucciarelli spiked home Hofstra's 20th point, Jakubowski ended it for The Hall, 25-20, to give her team a 2-1 match lead.
Â
SET 4:
Hofstra led for much of the fourth set. With the score tied at nine, the Pride went on a 6-1 run to grab a 15-10 advantage and force a Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates rallied, however, and a 9-2 run put them on top 19-17. Hofstra answered with a 5-0 burst to jump back ahead, 22-19, and never trailed again. The Pride went on to win set four, 25-22.
Â
SET 5:
The Pride opened the fifth set with eight of the first 10 points, and eventually the Hofstra lead grew to as large as 13-6. The Hall made a furious rally, however, with seven straight points, and a kill by Wilkins tied the set at 13. A Pirate attack error put Hofstra in match point, but another kill by Lucas tied the score at 14. Alas, Hofstra recorded kills on the final two volleys of the night and the Pirates fell, 16-14.
