BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite getting out to an early one-run lead, the Seton Hall baseball team were stymied offensively as they dropped the opening game of their three-game series against Florida Atlantic Friday night, 6-2.
In their first road contest since March 6, 2020, the Pirates (1-2) saw a strong start on the mound from senior Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.), who was sharp in 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Senior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
What Happened:
Junior shortstop Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) plated the first run of the game on a slashing line drive into center field that scored Dana, who reached second base on a double four batters prior. Grober, who had been hitless through his first five at-bats of the young season, got to the fastball of Owl pitcher Jackson Spiller. That would be all of the runs that Spiller would yield as he tossed five complete innings worth just three hits and the one run.
A third inning home run for the Owls tied the score at 1-1 before a big inning in the sixth gave them a 6-1 advantage..
Sophomore Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) would cash in and bring home graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) on an RBI single in the top of the eighth but it wouldn't enough as the Pirates dropped game one of the series.
